A new convenience store is scheduled to open Tuesday in downtown Hagerstown.
Jamil Malik, CEO of Penny Mart, said the new business at 167 S. Potomac St. could be the first of a few stores in Hagerstown. He also said there will be franchise opportunities in the Frederick-based company.
Malik said the space, on the first floor of a building at Potomac and Baltimore streets, was remodeled in about six weeks. The work started in mid-June.
"This location used to be a clothing shop. ... We have basically built a brand-new store," he said.
"We were looking for good spots," he said, and the area appealed to him.
"It's a nice location."
The store is something of a grocery and deli, he said, offering items such as sandwiches, wings, pizza and taquitos.
Penny Mart also will sell canned foods, fresh produce, tobacco products and other items. Malik said it will offer low prices and ongoing specials on cans of soda, cups of coffee and other wares.
"We've found good vendors who are working with us," he said.
Malik said he has experience in management positions with other retailers and is a former franchise owner with Jerry's Subs and Pizza.
"I always wanted to do my own brand. ... It took me like seven years," he said.
"The city of Hagerstown has been real good to us," Malik said.
